Become a Volunteer…

( Volunteer Policies and Volunteer Application)

Volunteers are an essential part of our mission to save dogs and catsand to find them new, loving homes.

There are many ways to volunteer: Dog Walking and play, Cat play and love, Bingo Night helpers, Thrift Store helpers, Grant writers, facebook helpers, shelter general help, vet trips and more. Keep on Reading and contact us if you think you might want to voluteer.

Castoff Pet Rescue is a small,  no-kill pet rescue located in Blairsville, Ga.  We have the capacity to house and care for approximately 20 dogs and 25 cats or kittens at any given time. Other than our kennel caretakers, who are responsible for feeding the dogs and cleaning their indoor and outdoor kennels, all other duties at the shelter are done by volunteers, including taking care of the many cats and kittens twice a day.

We are a casual and informal group, and love having responsible and reliable volunteers to help with a variety of tasks. If you are a dog lover, we welcome anyone interested in helping to train, walk, or just socialize our dogs. We have a fenced in yard where you can take a dog to play, or you can take one for a walk in the residential area near the shelter. Often volunteers are needed to take dogs or cats to vet appointments. If cats are your thing, we need to have people come spend time with the cats and kittens, who are often scared or even feral. This helps us socialize them and get them ready for new homes.

In addition to dealing directly with the animals, we always need people to help inside the shelter, by washing bowls, sweeping or doing laundry. Outside the shelter, we need people to help mend or generally spruce up the outdoor kennels where the dogs stay during the day. Volunteers who like to work outside are always needed to do lawn work or general maintenance.

A weekly BINGO game at the Blairsville Civic Center every Wednesday night is the primary fundraiser for Castoff. We can always use volunteers to help set up the tables, or help where needed.  From time to time we also do offsite fundraisers or adoption events at various places in the area and can always use help with those events.

Finally, we never have enough fosters. Fosters help us with special needs pets, puppies, or to open up a space at the shelter. Most fostering is short term and is one of the most important jobs that a volunteer can do. Fosters literally save lives and the rewards are boundless.

Castoff wants our volunteers to be happy and feel a sense of accomplishment in whatever they choose to do. We don’t require a specific schedule, or minimum number of hours per week. You may come and go as you please. However the best hours to volunteer would be between 10 am and 2 pm any day of the week.We do require volunteers to be at least 18 years of age.  If you would like more specific information about volunteer opportunities at Castoff, please contact us. We will try to tailor your specific talents to our specific needs. Thank you for considering Castoff!
